Printing PDF sewing patterns on your phone or tablet

Sewsy lets you print layered PDF sewing patterns directly from your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Note: Sewsy supports PDF files only.

Printing PDF Sewing Patterns in Sewsy

The steps below apply to both iOS and Android, unless otherwise noted.

Step 1 – Open your PDF pattern

On the Home screen, choose Print pattern.
Choose a PDF sewing pattern from your device or cloud storage.

Step 2 – Choose layers (optional)

Tap Layers at the bottom of the screen.
Select the layers you want to include, then close the Layers panel.

Note: If the pattern doesn’t include layers, the Layers button won’t appear.

Step 3 – Choose pages to print (optional)

If you don’t need all pages of the pattern, you can choose which pages to print.

You can:

  • Tap the checkbox or page number at the top of each page to select or deselect it
  • Or tap Print pages x–x at the bottom of the screen

This opens a sheet where you can:

  • Select all pages
  • Deselect all pages
  • Enter a custom page range (for example: 1–4, 7, 10–12)

Step 4 – Print

At this point, printing differs slightly depending on your device.

Printing on iOS

Tap the Print button.

In the iOS Print dialog:

  • Set Scale to 100%
  • Print your pattern

Tip (iOS)

Some printers ignore the 100% scale setting. If your pattern prints slightly too small or too large, try adjusting the scale manually in the Print dialog.

Printing on Android

Some Android printers automatically shrink prints. Sewsy includes a printer calibration tool to ensure your patterns print at the correct scale.

Option A – Print without calibration

If your printer already prints to scale:

  • Tap the Print button
  • Print your pattern

Option B – Calibrate your printer (recommended for first-time setup)

Tap the Print button, then tap Calibrate Printer.

Step 1 – Print the Test Sheet

  1. Choose your paper size (A4 or Letter) and preferred unit of measurement (inches or cm).
  2. Print the test sheet.
  3. Find the square that should measure 2" × 2" (or 5 cm × 5 cm).
  4. Continue to the next step in the app.

Step 2 – Enter Scale Values

  1. Enter the measured values from your test print.
  2. You can enter different values for width and height if they differ slightly.
  3. Print the verification sheet and check that the grid now measures correctly.
  4. If not, adjust the values and test again.
  5. Once accurate, tap Save. Sewsy will remember your calibration for future prints.

Step 3 – Print Your Pattern

  1. Tap Continue Printing to print your pattern at the correct scale.

Tips & Troubleshooting

  • Pattern prints too small or too large (iOS):
Some printers ignore the 100% scale setting. Try adjusting the scale manually in the Print dialog.
  • Pattern not to scale (Android):
Double-check that both calibration and printing use the same paper size (A4 or Letter).
  • No Layers button showing:
Some pattern files don’t include layers. In that case, the pattern will print as-is.
