Projecting Patterns
Calibrate with a cutting mat
Align the projected calibration area with a gridded cutting mat to set an accurate scale.
Overview
Calibration makes sure the projected pattern appears at its correct physical size.
The cutting-mat method lets you align Sewsy's calibration area with the grid already printed on your mat. This is usually the fastest method when a gridded cutting mat is available.
Before You Start
You will need:
- A gridded cutting mat
- Your projector connected to your device
- A clear, focused projected image
Do not move the projector after calibration.
Steps
1. Place the cutting mat
Place the cutting mat flat beneath the projector.
Use the largest clear area of the mat that fits within the projected image. A larger calibration area generally makes alignment easier to check.
2. Open the calibration flow
Open Sewsy, press Projector pattern, and choose the file you want to project.
If this is your first time calibrating
Sewsy starts the calibration setup automatically.
- 1Confirm that your projector is connected and positioned.
- 2Tap Continue.
- 3Choose Use a cutting mat.
If you have calibrated before
The pattern opens immediately.
Tap Recalibrate in the top right.
If you need to switch methods
If you used the measuring-tape method last time:
- 1Tap the ••• menu in the top toolbar.
- 2Choose Change calibration method.
- 3Choose Use a cutting mat.
3. Align the calibration area
Move the four calibration corners so they line up with a rectangular section of the cutting-mat grid.
Make sure each projected edge follows the corresponding grid line as closely as possible.
4. Enter the measurements
Enter the real width and height of the section you selected on the mat.
Check the units carefully before continuing.
5. Save the calibration
Save the calibration and return to the pattern.
Use the calibration grid to confirm that the projected measurements match the grid on your mat.
Sewsy remembers the calibration for future sessions.
Tips
Use grid lines that are easy to see and measure.
Avoid using a very small section of the mat when a larger area is available.
If the four corners align but the middle of a line does not, check that the mat is flat and that the projector image is in focus.
If you want to clear the saved calibration and start over completely, tap the ••• menu in the top toolbar and choose Reset calibration.
Troubleshooting
The pattern is still slightly too large or too small
Reopen calibration and confirm that the width and height were entered correctly.
Use the same unit shown by the measurements on your mat.
The scale was correct before, but is now wrong
Recalibrate if the projector, mount, cutting surface, or projector zoom has changed. Even a small movement can affect the physical size of the projection.
The corners align, but lines in the middle do not
Confirm that the cutting mat and projection surface are completely flat. Use a larger calibration area when possible and make sure the projector is focused clearly across the full surface.
I cannot align the corners
Make sure the projected calibration area fits fully within the visible part of the cutting mat. You may need to reposition the mat or choose a smaller section.
