Projecting Patterns

Set up your projector

Position your projector, connect your phone or tablet, and prepare your cutting surface.

Overview

Before calibrating Sewsy, position your projector and connect it to the phone or tablet running the app.

The goal is to create a clear, stable image over the surface where you will cut your fabric.

Steps

1. Position the projector

Place the projector above your cutting surface so the image points straight down.

A ceiling mount is usually the most stable setup, but a secure stand or tripod can also work.

Make sure the projector will not move while you are cutting.

2. Turn on the projector

Turn on the projector and display an image on your cutting surface.

Adjust the projector's focus until text and lines appear clear.

3. Connect your device

Connect your phone or tablet using the method supported by your projector.

This may include:

  • Screen mirroring
  • Casting
  • AirPlay
  • A cable or adapter

Once connected, confirm that the Sewsy screen appears through the projector.

4. Prepare the cutting surface

Clear the area beneath the projector.

Place your cutting mat, fabric, or other projection surface where you plan to work.

Avoid moving the projector after calibration. Changing its position or angle can affect the projected scale.

5. Open a pattern in Sewsy

Open Sewsy and press Projector pattern.

Select a PDF or SVG sewing pattern from your device or cloud storage.

You are now ready to calibrate.

Tips

Dimmer room lighting can improve contrast on darker fabrics.

For the most consistent setup, keep the projector, cutting surface, and device in the same position between sewing sessions.

Troubleshooting

My projector does not appear when I try to mirror

Confirm that the projector and your device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network when using wireless mirroring.

The exact connection process varies by projector and device. Check the projector manufacturer’s instructions if it does not appear.

The image is blurry

Adjust the physical focus control on the projector. Also confirm that the projector is stable and positioned at a suitable distance from the cutting surface.

The image is angled or distorted

Try to position the projector as squarely as possible above the surface. Sewsy's calibration corrects the scale, but a stable and reasonably straight setup will give better results.
