Getting Started

Organize your PDF sewing patterns

Set up a simple folder system so your sewing pattern files are easy to find later.

Overview

There is no single correct way to organize sewing patterns. The goal is simply to make your files easy to find when you want to print or project them.

Sewsy shows your 10 most recently opened patterns, while your full pattern collection remains in the folders where you saved it. A simple folder system makes it easier to reopen older files later.

Before You Start

Choose one main location for your sewing patterns.

Good options include:

  • iCloud Drive, if you mainly use Apple devices
  • Google Drive, if you use both Apple and Android devices
  • A folder stored directly on your phone or tablet

Cloud storage can make your patterns available across devices and helps protect them if you replace your phone or tablet.

Steps

1. Create one main sewing-pattern folder

Start with a single folder called something simple, such as:

Sewing Patterns

Save all your pattern files inside this folder instead of leaving them spread across email attachments, Downloads, and unrelated folders.

2. Choose a folder system

Use the system that feels easiest to maintain. You can always change it later.

Option 1: Organize by designer

Create one folder for each pattern company or designer.

Example:

Sewing Patterns
├── Closet Core
├── Helen's Closet
└── Grainline Studio

This works well if you usually remember who created a pattern.

Option 2: Organize by garment type

Group patterns by what they make.

Example:

Sewing Patterns
├── Tops
├── Pants
├── Dresses
└── Outerwear

This can be helpful if you usually browse based on what you want to sew next.

Option 3: Combine garment type and designer

Use garment types as the main folders, then create designer folders inside them.

Example:

Sewing Patterns
├── Tops
│ ├── Closet Core
│ └── Helen's Closet
└── Pants
    └── Grainline Studio

This gives a larger collection more structure, but it also takes more effort to maintain.

Option 4: Keep everything together

You can also keep every pattern in one folder.

Example:

Sewing Patterns
└── All Patterns

This is completely fine if you have a smaller collection or prefer not to manage many folders.

3. Move downloaded patterns into the folder

If a pattern was saved in Downloads, move it into your sewing-pattern folder.

On iPhone or iPad:

  1. 1Open the Files app.
  2. 2Find the pattern.
  3. 3Press and hold the file.
  4. 4Tap Move.
  5. 5Choose your Sewing Patterns folder.
  6. 6Tap Move again.

On Android:

  1. 1Open the Files app.
  2. 2Go to Downloads.
  3. 3Press and hold the pattern file.
  4. 4Open the menu and choose Move to.
  5. 5Select your Sewing Patterns folder.
  6. 6Tap Move here.

The wording may vary slightly depending on your device.

4. Use clear file names

Pattern files often have long or unclear names.

You can rename them so they are easier to recognize later.

A useful format is:

Designer - Pattern name - File type

For example:

Closet Core - Cielo Top - Projector PDF

You may also want to include:

  • Size range
  • Paper size
  • Projector, print-at-home, or copy-shop
  • Version number

Do not remove the file extension, such as `.pdf` or `.svg`.

5. Keep related files together

A pattern purchase may include several files, such as:

  • Instructions
  • Print-at-home PDF
  • Copy-shop PDF
  • Projector PDF
  • Different paper sizes
  • Different size ranges

Keeping all files for one pattern together can make it easier to find the correct version later.

You can place them inside their own pattern folder if needed.

Example:

Sewing Patterns
└── Closet Core
    └── Cielo Top
        ├── Instructions.pdf
        ├── Print at Home.pdf
        └── Projector.pdf

Tips

Choose the simplest system you will actually use. A single well-named folder is better than a complicated system that becomes difficult to maintain.

Avoid keeping your only copy of a pattern in Downloads, since downloaded files can be harder to find later.

When buying a new pattern, save or move it into your sewing-pattern folder right away.

Troubleshooting

A pattern is no longer in Sewsy's recent-files list

Sewsy shows your 10 most recently opened patterns.

When the list is full, opening another pattern removes the oldest item from the recent list. The original file is not deleted.

Browse to the folder where the pattern is stored and open it again.

I cannot find a recently downloaded pattern

Check these locations:

  • Downloads
  • iCloud Drive
  • On My iPhone or iPad
  • Google Drive
  • The Files app's recent-files section

Once you find it, move it into your main sewing-pattern folder.

The file is inside a ZIP folder

Some designers package pattern files inside a ZIP file.

Extract the ZIP first, then move the PDF or SVG files into your sewing-pattern folder.
